Master in Planning and Conservation of Gardens and Landscape

The Master in Planning and Conservation of Gardens and Landscape, implemented in collaboration with the Polytechnic of Milan and open to graduates in agricultural, natural or architectural fields, has a long tradition.

In 1996 started as post-graduate course originally called "Expert in design and construction of parks and gardens."

Starting from the eighth edition in 2003, this course has become a true Master of the Polytechnic of Milan but it continues to take place with the participation of teachers of Minoprio Foundation (www.fondazioneminoprio.it).

The course aims to train experts in the field of decorative greenery by the knowledge of the species used in gardens, analysis of the sites, carrying out projects to create new spaces or recovering of green areas also of historical interest, planning and managing new installations and maintenance, conducting operating sites.

The Master has a duration of 1500 hours, divided as follows:

835 for lectures, classroom exercises, visits, study tours, internships with institutions and businesses;

665 for individual study and preparation of projects.

The areas where the Master is divided are:

• Recognition and use of ornamental plants

• Landscape analysis and design

• Urban landscape

• History and restoration of gardens

• Protection and conservation of the landscape

The course includes the accumulation of credits for a total of 60 credits, as established by the Directive for the University Master's Level I and II of the Academic Senate of the Polytechnic of Milan.

The prevailing job opportunities for students of the Master are in offices, companies and institutions involved in the design and maintenance of the landscape.

IFLA AFRICA COMMITTEE and the JKUAT DEPARTMENT OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

would like to invite you to the 2^nd IFLA AFRICA symposium to be held from 5-7^th October 2011 at the Africa Institute for Capacity Development (AICAD) – JKUAT. The symposium focuses on “Landscape Architecture Education but will also address the advancement of the profession in Africa”.

Theme and Topics:

The theme is “Landscape Architecture in Africa: Status of education, practice and future challenges”.

Topics to be addressed within this theme are: 

Status of Education

·         Relevance and Challenges of Landscape Architecture

·         Cultural Landscapes

·         Research Techniques and Methods

·         UNESCO Landscape Charter for Africa (workshop)

·         Collaboration across the Continent (workshop)

Important dates for the review process are: Abstracts due: March 15 2011.  Notification of acceptance: March 30, 2011. Full manuscript draft due: April 30, 2011 Reviewed manuscript due: July 1, 2011. Conference: October 5^th -7^th. 2011. 

There will be 1 day of pre-symposium tour to experience a variety of the Kenyan landscapes: designed and natural in and around the city of Nairobi.

The Symposium goal is to reach a consensus on major educational issues, advancement of the profession, approaches to continential and international cooperation, identification of needs and programmes, discussion on establishing African standards and means for recognizing programmes in landscape architecture. We shall conclude with a series of recommendations on courses of action on these topics.

STATUS OF EDUCATION 

This subtheme focuses on the past and current status of education in landscape architecture, the philosophies including overviews of specific degree programs offered in the participant countries. These could include Diploma, Bachelors and Masters degree courses in Landscape Architecture. What is the future of Landscape Architecture education in Africa?

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE, RELEVANCE AND CHALLENGES OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

This subtheme looks at the professional practice, with its challenges and relevance in varied African contexts. It explores whether the current courses as offered are relevant to the practice and industry at large, offering feedback to educators. This subtheme shall also tackle issues related to practice and regulations in represented countries.

COLLABORATION ACROSS THE CONTINENT AND BEYOND

This subtheme looks at the various Landscape Architecture course available in Africa and explores credit transfer possibilities to enable mobility, collaboration and sharing of human and physical resources. It also looks at the tools available to enable collaboration such as the Le-Notre Thematic Network used by ECLAS in Europe.  What are the possibilities of professional collaborations across borders?

UNESCO LANDSCAPE CONVENTION FOR AFRICA

The Landscape Convention for Africa will seek specific and general measures to achieve landscape protection, management and planning. This is part of a larger UNESCO/IFLA initiative for a Global Landscape Charter.  These could be awareness-raising, training and education. It may further explore landscape character assessment to measure social value and monitor changes.

CULTURAL LANDSCAPES

Cultural landscapes are read as living memoirs of societal change, development and attendant interactions. How our landscapes changed and what is the future in face of rapid urbanisation?

RESEARCH TECHNIQUES AND TEACHING METHODS

This will look at the research and teaching methods are used in different schools and explore possible linkages and exchange of ideas. This may also look at case studies, critics and presentation of specific seminal projects, built and non-built.

TECHNOLOGY & MATERIALS

Sustainability defines the way we design, specify and construct our landscapes. What tools and technologies are available to users for research, education and practice?  What innovative materials are available to the design and construction teams for experiment and or actual project implementation?

CHINA JINZHOU WORLD LANDSCAPE ART EXPOSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

CHINA JINZHOU WORLD LANDSCAPE ART EXPOSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
& INVITATION FOR REGISTRATIONS OF INTEREST

IFLA (the International Federation of Landscape Architects), in association with JINZHOU CITY and JCOM CHINA CO LTD are pleased to announce and invite Registrations of Interest in the:

CHINA JINZHOU WORLD LANDSCAPE ART EXPOSITION

LOCATION:

This Expo will be held in Jinzhou City (situated in Northeast China) in 2013.

ELIGIBILITY:

Any Landscape Architect who is a member of a Member Association of IFLA is eligible to submit a Registration of Interest (RoI).

BROAD OUTLINE OF THE COMPETITION:

From all those who submit a RoI, an international panel of senior IFLA members will select a field of at least 30 (but not more than 50) registrants who will be invited to prepare a Preliminary Concept Design for one of 20 gardens, which will be 2000m2 in area, set amidst a larger park area of 176 hectares in New Jinzhou City.
A 10 member Jury Panel made up of invited representatives of Jinzhou City, IFLA and JCOM, will select 20 landscape architects to develop their designs further to Developed Concept Design stage. Each of the 20 selected landscape architects will receive $US10, 000 to do this.
Locally based Chinese landscape architects will prepare construction details based on the Developed Concept Designs and will oversee the construction of the 20 gardens. The gardens will form a key part of a new park which will be opened to the public in 2013. The exposition will take place from May – October, 2013.
Visitors to the Expo will be invited to vote for the gardens they like best. At the end of the Expo the three most popular gardens will be announced and the designers will receive prizes of $US
10, 000 for 1st place, $US7, 500 for 2nd place and $US5, 000 for 3rd.

EXPO THEME:

 
The main theme of the Expo is “The World is a Garden”. The theme reflects the idea that Landscape Architecture and Garden Art are amongst the most pleasing aspects of human existence, on an almost spiritual level, for all peoples, everywhere. As such, the theme of the competition is as follows:

“LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AND GARDEN ARTS UNITE ALL PEOPLES – WORLD CIVILIZATIONS AND WORLD CULTURES COME TOGETHER IN JINZHOU”!

COMPETITION SCHEDULE:

The schedule for the competition is as follows.

• FEB 15, 2011 – Invitations to register interest sent out to all IFLA Member Associations
• MARCH 15, 2011 – Closing date for RoI’
• MARCH 31, 2011 – Selection of successful RoI’s completed
• APRIL 30, 2011 – Preliminary Design Concepts completed and submitted by selected registrants
• MAY 15, 2011 – Selection of Top 20 landscape architects who will prepare Developed Concept Plans completed
• JUNE 30, 2011 – Deadline for submission of Developed Concept Plans
• JULY 2011 – Visit by all 20 landscape architects to Jinzhou to attend press conference
• APRIL – OCTOBER, 2012 – Construction Phase, including site visit by the landscape architects
• MAY 2013 (tentative) – opening of Expo
• OCTOBER 2013 – Closing of Expo and announcement of winners of design competition.
